    The Instrumentation and Controls team has designed a control and instrumentation system for the 2015 Cal Poly Solar Decathlon house that will monitor temperature, humidity, and energy usage throughout the house and control the phase change material duct. It will relay information to the user through a tablet application developed by the Computer Science team. The team has also designed a lighting control scheme for use with Lutron’s HomeWorks QS lighting control system

    Two New Pentacyclic Triterpenoids, an Alkaloid and a Long-chain Fatty Acid from Albizia Coriaria (Welw ex. Oliver)

    Herein, we report the occurrence of four new compounds in ethanolic extract of Albizia coriaria Welw ex. Oliver leaves along with other compounds previously reported in this species. The compounds were isolated and characterized using column chromatography, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. FTIR spectrum of the extract showed phenolic OH stretching (3362.30 cm-1), C=O (1660.08 cm-1), CO stretching (1369.46 cm-1 and 1319.00 cm-1) and CN stretch (1072.44 cm-1) which confirmed the presence of alcohols, carboxylic acids and nitrogen-containing compounds. Oleanolic acid (1), oleanolic acid acetate (2), pterin-6-carboxylic acid (3), undecanol (4), betulinic acid (5), betulin (6) and benzyl alcohol (7) were tentatively identified in the extract.     Characterisation of the Upper Respiratory Tract Virome of Feedlot Cattle and its Association with Bovine Respiratory Disease

    Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is a major health problem within the global cattle industry. This disease has a complex aetiology, with viruses playing an integral role. In this study, metagenomics was used to sequence viral nucleic acids in the nasal swabs of BRD affected cattle. Viruses detected included those well known for their association with BRD in Australia (bovine viral diarrhea virus 1), as well as viruses known to be present but not fully characterised (bovine coronavirus) and viruses that have not been reported in BRD affect cattle in Australia (bovine rhinitis, bovine influenza D, and bovine nidovirus). Nasal swabs from a case control study were subsequently tested for 10 viruses and the presence of at least one virus was found to be significantly associated with BRD. Some of the more recently detected viruses had inconsistent association with BRD. Full genome sequences for bovine coronavirus, a virus increasingly associated with BRD, and bovine nidovirus were complete. Both viruses belong to the Coronaviridae family, which are frequently associated with disease in mammals. This study has provided greater insights into the viral pathogens associated with BRD and highlighted the need for further studies to elucidate more precisely the roles viruses play in BRD

    Identification of IbeR as a Stationary-Phase Regulator in Meningitic Escherichia coli K1 that Carries a Loss-of-Function Mutation in rpoS

    IbeR is a regulator present in meningitic Escherichia coli strain E44 that carries a loss-of-function mutation in the stationary-phase (SP) regulatory gene rpoS. In order to determine whether IbeR is an SP regulator in E44, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and LC-MS were used to compare the proteomes of a noninvasive ibeR deletion mutant BR2 and its parent strain E44 in the SP. Four up-regulated (TufB, GapA, OmpA, AhpC) and three down-regulated (LpdA, TnaA, OpmC) proteins in BR2 were identified when compared to E44. All these proteins contribute to energy metabolism or stress resistance, which is related to SP regulation. One of the down-regulated proteins, tryptophanase (TnaA), which is regulated by RpoS in other E. coli strains, is associated with SP regulation via production of a signal molecule indole. Our studies demonstrated that TnaA was required for E44 invasion, and that indole was able to restore the noninvasive phenotype of the tnaA mutant. The production of indole was significantly reduced in BR2, indicating that ibeR is required for the indole production via tnaA. Survival studies under different stress conditions indicated that IbeR contributed to bacteria stress resistance in the SP. Taken together, IbeR is a novel regulator contributing to the SP regulation

    AbstractDishevelleds are modular proteins that lie at the crossroads of divergent Wnt signaling pathways. The DIX domain of dishevelleds modulates a β-catenin destruction complex, and thereby mediates cell fate decisions through differential activation of Tcf transcription factors. The DEP domain of dishevelleds mediates planar polarity of cells within a sheet through regulation of actin modulators. In Caenorhabditis elegans asymmetric cell fate decisions are regulated by asymmetric localization of signaling components in a pathway termed the Wnt/β-catenin asymmetry pathway. Which domain(s) of Disheveled regulate this pathway is unknown. We show that C. elegans embryos from dsh-2(or302) mutant mothers fail to successfully undergo morphogenesis, but transgenes containing either the DIX or the DEP domain of DSH-2 are sufficient to rescue the mutant phenotype. Embryos lacking zygotic function of SYS-1/β-catenin, WRM-1/β-catenin, or POP-1/Tcf show defects similar to dsh-2 mutants, including a loss of asymmetry in some cell fate decisions. Removal of two dishevelleds (dsh-2 and mig-5) leads to a global loss of POP-1 asymmetry, which can be rescued by addition of transgenes containing either the DIX or DEP domain of DSH-2. These results indicate that either the DIX or DEP domain of DSH-2 is capable of activating the Wnt/β-catenin asymmetry pathway and regulating anterior–posterior fate decisions required for proper morphogenesis

    Objective: To develop a novel software method (AR2) for reducing muscle contamination of ictal scalp electroencephalogram (EEG), and validate this method on the basis of its performance in comparison to a commercially available software method (AR1) to accurately depict seizure-onset location. Methods: A blinded investigation used 23 EEG recordings of seizures from 8 patients. Each recording was uninterpretable with digital filtering because of muscle artifact and processed using AR1 and AR2 and reviewed by 26 EEG specialists. EEG readers assessed seizure-onset time, lateralization, and region, and specified confidence for each determination. The two methods were validated on the basis of the number of readers able to render assignments, confidence, the intra-class correlation (ICC), and agreement with other clinical findings. Results: Among the 23 seizures, two-thirds of the readers were able to delineate seizure-onset time in 10 of 23 using AR1, and 15 of 23 using AR2 (
